about

Water on the Moon:
Letters from Earth

Water on the Moon is a collection of previously unreleased material spanning the Growler years. Many come from letters and correspondence shared immediately after the group’s Austin period, when members were spread across the country.

Growler was christened by two friends over a growler of Dead Guy on the night of the Super Bowl in 2009. That same night, two became three after they met a new friend at an MV & EE show. They got together with instruments and played “The Song of the Room,” went swimming in creeks, and sat on dirty floors and leaned against walls. They growled. They loved one another. They listened to A Tree with Roots. They waxed poetic and waned lean, and waxed poetic again about beans. They had the “Thunderbird Wine Blues.” One threw a bottle of honey into the distance, saying, “Fare thee well, my honey.”

They had to part ways sooner than they'd hoped. They kept in touch. They kept writing songs. They discovered more truths. These are their correspondence, their heartbreak, their triumphs, their rituals, their laughs. Letters from friends, between friends. How are you doing, friend? These are songs about the limits of mortality and the yearnings of the soul. Dreams and sparks, flashing in the dark.
